By using and completing this programme, it is expected that learners will be able to:

  • Describe the Health and Safety at Work Act, substances hazardous to health, good manual handling procedures and how to carry out a risk assessment
  • Understand the legal requirements for fire safety, how to prevent a fire and the procedures to follow on discovering a fire
  • Identify the legal responsibilities of food handlers, understand the importance of personal hygiene, cleanliness of work areas, pest control and stock control procedures
  • State the law regarding national minimum wage, the rights of staff to time off work, sickness benefit, the law regarding transfers of undertakings and identify the law with regard to Tax and National Insurance
  • Identify the current alcohol legislation, the current licensing objectives in England, Wales & Scotland, recommended forms of proof of age and the law in relation to the sale of alcohol to under 18s
